Santa Maria Clinic
New Construction
The scope of work for this project encompasses the design of a single-story, 4,389 SF building. studio 2G was chosen for its design team’s expertise in navigating site constraints while delivering a comprehensive program on a tightly confined property that approaches zero net energy performance. This new facility will provide the community with an additional source of primary care and a specialized medical staff. Additionally, the clinic offers diagnostic and treatment services, supported by on-site laboratory facilities, consultation rooms, and recovery bays, enhancing the overall healthcare options available to the community.
The design of this clinic emphasizes privacy, security and beauty ensuring that each space has access to daylight and views from inside. For this facility the design intention was realized by implementing a central raised clerestory above the way-finding on the interior and the use of perforated metal screens at the lower level fenestrations providing the dual benefits: of filter interior daylight and providing the required unanimity of a medical clinic. Located in a blended zone of commercial and residential uses, this project’s materiality and form yield a work of architecture that is grounded to its place and makes an artful statement.

Prioritizing Privacy
A primary focus of this project was the prioritization of client privacy, a fundamental principle in any medical facility. The team aimed to maintain this privacy while creating a warm and comfortable environment for both clients and staff. Natural light was maximized throughout the space, ensuring visibility to the outside and fostering a sense of openness. The building’s exterior was designed to be inviting and tasteful, complementing the comfortable atmosphere within, thus enhancing the overall experience for all who enter.

EV Charging Stations
With the growing number of electric vehicle users among patients and staff, ensuring convenient access to charging while they receive care or work is of the utmost importance. Installing these stations promotes sustainability and demonstrates a commitment to environmental health, which aligns with the overall mission of healthcare. Additionally, offering EV charging can enhance patient satisfaction and attract eco-conscious patients, potentially improving community relations.
-
Clerestory
The clerestory not only contributes to the overall aesthetics of the clinic but also serves a functional purpose by enhancing daylighting and promoting a sense of openness. This design element adds to the clinic's welcoming atmosphere, creating a positive and comforting experience for both patients and medical staff. Moreover, the incorporation of windows, screened on the exterior with perforated metal for privacy, in each exam room, aligns with the project's commitment to sustainability, fostering an eco-friendly and health-conscious architectural approach.

Medical Technical Needs
The project involves specific programmatic space sizes and arrangements. This presents challenges in determining the flow within the footprint, including considerations for accessibility and the purpose of each space. With a designated Main Teams area, nurses can easily oversee and access all exam rooms to stay attuned to patient needs. Each room is equipped uniformly, and the millwork must incorporate standard elements. Beyond the technical aspects, there's an additional layer to the design—to create a facility that is comforting and positive for everyone.
